Smaller amounts of tomato paste are now available without waste. Another option is to store small amount of tomato paste in an ice tray and pop them out when needed.
* Always turn meat with tongs during grilling. Using a fork pierces the meat and allows the juices to escape, resulting in tough, dry meat.
* Spray plastic storage containers with vegetable cooking spray to keep them from being stained by spaghetti sauce, chili or any tomato-based sauce.
* A quick spritz of vegetable cooking spray on a measuring spoon also makes it easy to get honey off. If you don’t have cooking spray, a drop or two of cooking oil or a quick rub with a dab of margarine will work as well.
* Remove burned food from a skillet by covering the bottom of the pan with water and adding a drop or two of dish soap. Bring this mixture to a boil on the stove, and burned-on food should be easy to remove.
* Always clean the grill thoroughly before firing up the barbecue. Not only is a dirty grill unappetizing, it could harbor bacteria and will definitely affect food’s flavor. Use both a scraper and a grill brush to remove any burned-on food, and rinse thoroughly. To avoid having to do such heavy cleaning again, spray the grill with nonstick cooking spray before starting the barbecue. Food will be much less likely to stick this way.

I’ve recently been appointed project manager on a flat redevelopment on a 1 bedroom flat in Gloucester Place, London, N1. The flat is part of a 3 floor conversion that was clearly completed as cheaply as possible and now looking very tired. We work typically doing complete renovations of flats in central London with budgets of £100,000 and up. This project is unique, our total budget for this flat is £6,000 and that needs to include a complete new fitted kitchen, bathroom, carpets, front door and decorating and window treatments.
In this article we will discuss the process of sourcing the kitchen. Our first port of call for kitchens is always Poggenpohl, this clearly was not going to work here, our last kitchen install was £48,000, the refrigerator was over £6,000, the total budget for our fit out. Our allocation for the kitchen is £1,200 which needs to include granite worktops, appliances, the kitchen cabinets and installation. Is this really possible?
Our first stop were some obvious choices, Ikea. We liked the Faktum kitchen units and the quality looked great for the money, the cabinets were priced between £60 and £140 so kitchen units would be around £900. With appliances, worktops and installation we were over £2,900, so it wasn’t going to be Ikea.
Our next stop was the internet and we selected Howdens, Kitchens Simply and Kitchens Direct. We called Howdens and we were told they were trade only so that was pretty fruitless. Next we got a call back from Kitchens Simply after completing their online form and we arrange an appointment with one of their guys. We did the same with Kitchens Direct and had the appointments set for Thursday.
First in was kitchens Direct. We looked through the range and like the clean contemporary look of the Mezzo line. The prices we were seeing were way out of budget however, the more we discussed, negotiated and told him that we needed a cheap kitchen, the lower they came. The salesman seemed to focus on their great finance deals, which did sound attractive although irrelevant to us as we were a cash buyer. Although they didn’t come within our budget, the product looked good and they are certainly top choice at the moment.
Next was Kitchens Simply. We looked through the catalogue and really liked their modern kitchens but rather than getting wrapped up in the design this time we gave them the budget and our requirements, a complete cheap kitchen, fitted for under £1,200, no finance required. They had a few interesting solutions that certainly fit the bill. We agreed on a black gloss kitchen, granite worktops, stainless steel appliances all installed for just over £1,600. They could come within budget however, a few hundred more for granite and stainless appliances was not a tricky decision.

With the current state of the economic climate people are looking at more and more way to save money and do things in a cheaper way. This is defiantly the case when it comes to upgrading your kitchen. As an example I recently refurbished my own kitchen. This involved replacing all kitchen doors, worktops, cornice, pelmet and plinths this was an average sized kitchen and I did all the work myself. The total price was £1200 pound. I had previously been quoted £9520 for someone else to fit a new kitchen excluding any appliances.
After reviewing my options I decided that because the existing kitchen units were in good condition it would be a waste of time replacing these with new units. I then took a look on the internet and got a good price on custom doors that fitted my existing units exactly I also ordered some sold end panels and matching cornice, pelmet and plinth that once fitted covered the old units completely. I then took one of the offcuts from my plinth and matched it up with a nice worktop and fitted this shortly after.
The only part I needed help was with disconnecting the gas as this should be done by a corgi registered gas fitter but I did all the plumbing myself. After finishing the kitchen now looks new, all aspects of the old kitchen are covered and nobody but me would know the difference. This is an excellent way of doing things if you are looking at smartening your house up for a quick sale without the unneeded expense of a complete refit.
Although before embarking on such a project be sure to do you research and find out the best way to measure your doors and make sure you have the right tools for the job. At bare minimum you will need a hand saw, but ideally you will have an electric chop saw, router, jig, jigsaw. There are lots of tutorials on the internet for doing this sort of work so make sure you take a good look before you start.

Ok, the first thing to do is to place a level on the floor in a series of places around the area where the units will be fitted. find the lowest point of the room. This is the place where you will start your datum line. Next, measure the height of your units (not including the feet), measure the height of your plinth and add 5mm for clearance. You will now have the height to set your datum line at. Measure from the floor at the lowest point and put a mark on the wall, then draw a level line around the room.
You can now start to mark out your kitchen as per the plans. Remembering to Mark out all clad on end panels (if supplied). Measure 500mm off your datum line; this will give you the bottom line of your wall unit. Then simply measure the height of your wall units and continue. At this stage it is recommended to mark out where you are going to need electrical or plumbing supplies. Please note all integrated appliances will need these supplies inside the nearest unit as electrical plugs and pipe work behind the appliance will often prevent them pushing back into place.
You are now ready to start fitting your base units. If you have one, always fit the corner unit first and work off this unit as a point of reference. The neatest tool to use for cutting out holes in base units is the hole saw, select the correct size for the cut out in question whether it is for pipe work or electric cables. When leaving spaces between units for appliances, a small amount of clearance is required to enable ease of fitting. This is also helpful for future maintenance and servicing of the appliance. Once all your base units are fitted its time to fit the wall units. Please refer to your instructions manual to find the dimensions for fitting wall unit brackets.
Now all your kitchen units are fitted you are ready to start on the worktops. It is recommended to consult a professional when attempting a butt and scribe worktop joint. However if its worktop strips being used it can be quite an easy process. Measure the area requiring a work surface, add on a couple of inches (80mm) put the worktop in place and mark the underside using the end base unit as a guide. Its recommended using a router and a jig to ensure a straight and true line is achieved. Contact adhesive and a brush or spreader is required to stick on edging strips (if working with laminated worktops)
Once the work surfaces are fitted and screwed down you are ready to cut out your sink and hob appliances. Making sure you refer to the fitting instructions for each set of dimensions. Mark the cut outs and cut out using a jig saw. The pipe work should already be in place, making the connections to the sink and hob a straight forward procedure. Ensure a corgi registered gas fitted is on site to make the gas connection on both the hob and oven. (If required)
You are now ready to start fitting the cornice, lighting pelmet and plinth. This also is the time to fit any infill pieces using a colour coded panel. A Chop saw is required to complete this job professionally.
The last task is to fit the doors onto the units. The reason this job is left until the end is due to the potential damage caused by completing the previous tasks. Once all the doors are fitted its time to fit the handles. You should now have a fully working, perfectly fitted kitchen.
